| Summary of Chapter 21 |
| The Supernatural Powers of the Tathagatas |
When the innumerable Boddhisattvas who appeared from the underground vowed to spread the Lotus Sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha and the other Buddhas as his emanations showed their supernatural powers. That is, they stretched their broad and long tongues upwards until the tips reached the top of the heavens, and they emitted rays of light with an immeasurable variety of colors from their bodies. They coughed and snapped their fingers, and these two sounds reverberated over all the worlds, making them quake in the six ways.
Then Shakyamuni Buddha said to the congregation, "The supernatural powers of the Buddhas are immeasurable, limitless and inconceivable. But I shall not be able to describe the merit of this sutra to those to whom this sutra is to be be transmitted even if I continue describing them by my supernatural powers for immeasurable kalpas. Those who would keep this sutra will be able to attain the enlightenment of the Buddha definitely and doubtlessly."
The last part of Chapter 21 is chanted for ancestral services and services for deceased ministers to praise them for following the teachings of the Lotus Sutra.
