Nichiren Shu considers Chapter 2 to be one of the four most important chapters of the Lotus Sutra. The name of the chapter means “expedients” or “skillful means.”
In this chapter the Buddha reveals that, because his enlightment is so hard to express in words, in the past he adapted his teachings to the capacities of his listeners to teach them portions of the truth that pointed toward the whole truth. In this Sutra the teachings are unified in the One Vehicle which teaches that anyone can obtain the perfect form of enlightenment and become a Buddha. |
