"Kaimoku-sho"HELLO!
Here is our July 2006 Newsletter. July is Obon season. You have noticed Obon Services and
Bon dance conducted at many places in Hawaii. We will also be conducting Obon services.
Here are this month's announcements.
SHIN BON-E SERVICE ON JULY 8
Shin Bon-e Service will be held on Saturday, July 8 at 7:00 p.m. Anyone who had lost
relatives since our last O-bon Service is requested to attend the service. A lantern will
be dedicated for each deceased person. Please wear your Gyo-e if you have it.
O-BON SEGAKI SERVICE ON JULY 9
O-bon service will be held on Sunday, July 9 at 10:00 a.m. O-bon is a very important event
for Buddhists, therefore, everyone is encouraged to attend this service. Following the
service, refreshments will be served.
In most cases the O-bon service is held together with the Segaki service. The O-bon
service originated with the Venerable Mokuren, one of the ten great disciples of the
Buddha, who saved his mother from the World of Hunger. Through various offerings to hungry
souls, paying homage to the deceased, and having ministers chant sutras, we pray that our
ancestors souls will be saved from suffering and that they will enjoy a peaceful life in
the land of the Buddha.
It is important for us to think anew of our relationships with our ancestors, parents,
brothers and sisters, and to try to repay their favors to us. We should hold memorial
services for our ancestors, and through the merits of doing so, we renew our sense of
gratitude and enrich our lives.
If you would like to order tobas, please submit your application form before July 2.

Otakiage is the ceremony of burning old Ofudas. These items are to be burned, not thrown

gratitude at the Otakiage service.
