NEW YEAR'S MESSAGE

by Bishop Joyo Ogawa

A HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of our members and friends.

Last year, there were many disasters all over the world such as earthquakes,
tsunamis, hurricanes, typhoons,  floods and so forth.   Terror attacks are
still continuing one after another in Iraq and many other countries.
I am thankful that Hawaii has not had any terrible natural disasters or
terrorist attacks.

One of the slogans of  Nichiren-shu is "Environment, Peace, and Life".
"Environment" means to protect nature. In recent years, we have been
attacked by super strong hurricane or typhoon.  It is said that global
warming is the reason for the occurrence of super strong hurricane or
typhoon.  We human beings are a part of this world of nature.  We can stave
off some disasters through our own effort if each one of us takes care of
our environment.  We should not use unnecessary natural resources.
"Peace" is our wish.  However, true peace is not kept by politicians nor
armed forces.    True peace will come from our heart.
Let us cherish our "life".   Nichiren-Shonin says, "Life is most essential
for all."  To cherish other lives is to value your own life.
If we all make an effort to protect nature and our environment, we can
effectively change our society and the world for the better.
The Buddha tells in the Lotus Sutra, "All living beings are my children."
The Buddha is always watching us.  We, everyone of us, should try to purify
the suffering in this world and to build a peaceful world with Buddha's
teachings.
When we realize we are watched and protected by the Buddha, we can feel our
pleasure of upholding our faith.  Thus, our mind will be peaceful,  our life
will be brightened, and we can attain true happiness.
Let us chant the Odaimoku.  Let us receive the great Buddha's compassion,
which is wrapped in the five characters of the Odaimoku.  Let us share the
pleasure of our faith with our children, grand children, and friends.

My best wishes of good health, happiness and prosperity to all of you
throughout the year of 2006.

Dear Members

by Eric Kawatani, President

On behalf of the Board of Directors and officers of our Mission, we wish
you a Happy New Year.  The New Year is traditionally, a time when we spend
with our family and friends to refocus our energies and set our goals for
the year.  As Nichiren Buddhists, we are blessed with the O-Daimoku.  We
believe that the prayer of Namu Myoho Renge Kyo will bring out the highest
virtues within us and that our prayers will create a positive change in our
lives, our families and the community as a whole. We urge you to come to the
Mission and join us in prayer to bring positive change to ourselves, our
families and ultimately, peace on earth.

Our Mission continues to work with the various other Nichiren temples in
Hawaii to preserve and perpetuate our faith. As Bishop Ogawa has explained,
the Nichiren Shu Headquarters is promoting the theme of transmitting the
O-Daimoku to the next generation.  This is an important goal for our Mission
this year.

As always, we ask for your continued support of our temples.  More than
before, we need volunteers to help clean the temples and to help our temples
in general through donations.  May we ask for your continued support this
year.
